St. Cyril of Alexandria (c. AD 376–444), honoured as The Pillar of Faith and Seal of all the Fathers, became Archbishop of Alexandria in AD 412. A profound theologian and interpreter of Scripture, he defended the Church’s confession that Jesus Christ is one divine Person—the eternal Word of God—who truly assumed human nature without ceasing to be God (the Hypostatic Union). His teaching was central to the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus in 431.

Cyril defended the title Theotokos for the Virgin Mary against Nestorious, the Archbishop of Constantinople, because the Son born from her is truly God Incarnate. He taught that salvation is possible because the Divine Word genuinely entered human life, suffered in the flesh and conquered death.
