Description

St. Thomas lived during the first century AD and, according to Church tradition, was martyred in India around AD 72. He was one of the Twelve and displayed a courageous devotion to Christ, once declaring his willingness to accompany the Lord even unto death. After the Resurrection, Thomas initially refused to rely solely upon the testimony of the other disciples, but his uncertainty ended when the risen Christ appeared and invited him to behold His wounds (John 20:24-29).

Thomas then made one of the clearest confessions in the Gospel: Christ is both Lord and God. Orthodox tradition consequently speaks more properly of the “Belief” or “Touching of Thomas,” rather than defining him permanently by doubt. He carried the Gospel eastward through Mesopotamia and Persia and is especially associated with the establishment of the ancient Church in India.
