Description

This icon portrays Christ during His Passion and humiliation. He is clothed in a scarlet robe, crowned with thorns, and holding a reed. His hands are bound in ropes, like a lamb being prepared for slaughter. These were placed upon Him by the Roman soldiers who mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” (Matthew 27:29)

The title “Bridegroom” is drawn from the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1–13), in which Christ reveals Himself as the Bridegroom who comes suddenly in the middle of the night, calling the faithful to constant watchfulness and preparation. The title reveals the mystery of Christ’s love: He is the divine Bridegroom who comes to unite Himself to His Bride - the Church.
