Description

Saint Euphemia (third century–AD 304) was a young Christian of Chalcedon who was arrested during Emperor Diocletian’s persecution. When ordered to participate in a pagan festival and sacrifice to Ares, she refused. She endured a succession of cruel torments while remaining steadfast in her confession of Christ and finally received martyrdom in the arena.

The icon shows her holding the Cross of martyrdom. Her youthful, peaceful appearance proclaims that the strength manifested in her suffering came from divine grace rather than earthly power.
