Description

St. Mary Magdalene lived during the first century AD, although the precise dates of her birth and repose are unknown. She is honoured with the titles of Holy Myrrh-bearer, Equal-to-the-Apostles, and Apostle to the Apostles. She was healed by Christ from seven demons and thereafter became His devoted disciple. She accompanied and supported His ministry, remained close during the Crucifixion and observed where His body was laid.

Mary came to the tomb early on the first day of the week and became the first recorded witness to the risen Christ, who sent her to announce the Resurrection to the Apostles. Church tradition remembers her continued proclamation of the Gospel and associates her with the red egg used in the Paschal greeting. She is honoured as Equal-to-the-Apostles because she proclaimed the risen Lord to those who would proclaim Him throughout the world.
